JASON SPITERI CROWNED MAGIC NATIONAL CHAMPION

Msida, MALTA — July 5, 2009

On Sunday 5 July 2009, Jason Spiteri was crowned Maltese Champion of the popular Trading Card Game Magic: The Gathering after having to beat some stiff competition. Jason will now take part in the Magic World Championships in Rome between November 19 and 22 at the Palazzo Dei Congressi. If he were to win the Magic Worlds, as the world championship is known, Spiteri would be cashing in a fabulous $45,000 prize. However, coming 75th would be enough to clinch a cash-prize as the total sum distributed as prizes at the Magic Worlds this year will be of $245,245. Last year’s Magic Worlds was organized at Memphis, USA and was won by Finnish player Antti Malin.

The Malta National Tournament was organised by iCon ltd, local representatives for Wizards of the Coast and was overseen by official Italian judge Cristiana Dionisio who flew over to Malta for the occasion. Dionisio said that the event was  "very correct and professional while maintaining a high level of enthisiasm". As a part of the prize for the winner iCon is offering the trip to Rome while runner-up Simon Bugeja and third-place Bryan Scicluna also received a prize.

Magic, as the game is commonly known, has become a veritable intellectual sport since its world release in 1993. Created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield, Magic is played by an estimated 6 million players in over 70 countries, including Malta. Being the original Trading Card Game, Magic introduced the concept of collecting, exchanging and playing with fantasy cards. The game is very dynamic and strategic at the same time as each player strives to reduce the life points of the opponent from 20 to 0 using his or her unique, custom-made deck of cards. Magic cards have also been extremely popular for their amazing fantasy art, drawn by over 400 renowned fantasy artists.

This summer Magic celebrates its 16th year with the Magic2010 release. More information on www.forbiddenpower.com
