Dungeon Master Guide |
Dungeons and Dragons is best played in a group,
around a table, with one person acting as a Gamesmaster
(GM). Each of the other players takes on the role
of a different character. As a player it is up
to you to decide what character you wish to be,
including type, race, alignment and background
(e.g. an Elf Ranger). All these characteristics
have a bearing on the abilities and weaknesses
of your characters throughout the game (e.g. Elves
are agile and good with bows, but weaker than
humans). If you wish you may also paint a miniature
to represent you in the game! As you go along,
provided that your character is not killed you
gain experience and acquire new skills and knowledge
between one adventure and another!
In the game the GM is responsible for the story
line and for controlling all the events in the
game apart from the actions of a character. You
are responsible for your own character, and it
is entirely up to you to decide what actions to
take and how to face the challenges that the adventure
throws in your way, just as in real life! Of course,
it is also up to you to face the consequences
